Roman Fort Saalburg
At the latest in May of every year the summer feeling kicks in and you can be sure that summer is on its way. We used such a day in May to visit the Roman military camp near Bad Homburg. The Roman Fort Saalburg had invited and we were only too eager to explore this piece of historical land. Which since 2005 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represents one of the borders of the former Roman Empire.

At this point I will leave out further quotes from wikipedia and rather mention what there is to see and explore on this reconstructed fortification. Assuming good weather, it is recommended to first walk the good 2 kilometer long circular route around the Saalburg. Starting from the main entrance, you will pass sectional fortifications, go through nature and along the Limes (the border of the Roman Empire). All stations are equipped with information boards and thus important information. So is the Jupiter column in the south of the complex.

From outside to inside
Having explored the exterior, we went through the imposing main gate (Porta Praetoria) and entered the interior of the Saalburg. Here, in an authentic reconstruction, we find the commander’s residence, the granary, the crew barracks, the staff building and the workshop building. Today, the buildings are used for exhibitions and the museum café, which we visited later.

The Roman Fort offers a great excursion opportunity and to explore the ancient world. The mix of a nature walk and the possibility to visit the museum followed by a feast for the palate makes the visit very entertaining. Furthermore, as a visitor to the Saalburg, you get a great insight into the world of yesterday. The 7,- € per person are worth the entrance fee in any case.
