Geierlay Suspension Cable Bridge
Between Trier and Koblenz, in the middle of Rhineland-Palatinate, you will find the Geierlay Suspension Cable Bridge. Located in the low mountain region of Hunsrück, it is one of many landmarks with recognition value. Over 360 m long and 100 m high, it requires a certain head for heights on the part of the visitor. Especially on a nice warm fall day, the traffic on the bridge is enormous and crossing it becomes a little adventure.

Earlier on our tour of Germany, we wanted to make a stop at the Geierlay Suspension Bridge. But had to postpone this due to time constraints. So now we used one of the warmest October days for a short trip to the second longest suspension rope bridge in Germany, which is intended exclusively for pedestrians. Parking is available in the neighboring village of Mörsdorf, about 30 minutes walk from the bridge. Just follow the signs and have some change ready for the parking ticket. We parked at the sports field north of Mörsdorf for the minimum parking fee of 6, – €.

Afterwards we went through the village and out in the direction of the suspension rope bridge Geierlay. There are then two paths here: a trekking path through the forest and a paved path along the fields. So depending on the group and the weather, either one or the other path is recommended. After about half an hour at a parade pace, we reached the Geierlay. On this beautiful Sunday, the crowds were high and so we had to fight our way to the other end.
Geierlay Suspension Cable Bridge
The bridge is part of the hiking trails in Hunsrück and attracts several hundred visitors a day. The Geierlay is open daily and maintenance costs are funded by the widespread use of wind power in the area, according to information boards on site. There is no charge for walking on the bridge itself. The 0.85 m width at the foot is just enough to pass each other. Those who are afraid of heights will certainly be bothered by the additional vibrations on the bridge. Everyone else will enjoy a nice trip, with a great view right in the heart of Germany.
